They're cute, they're fuzzy. They'll hopefully lay eggs someday!
As if graduating, moving, both starting new jobs/careers, buying a house, and moving again wasn't enough change for one year, we decided that we might as well fulfill another life dream and get chickens.
We were considering getting older pullets (young hens that haven't laid eggs yet), but there weren't any available when we finally got the nerve up to get the chickens. Chicks are adorable anyway. And it's fun to watch them grow and learn their personalities.
I'm OK with us having chicks.
The one thing is that it's tricky to determine the sex of a chick, so we might have a rooster (or more than one rooster...) disguising itself as a cute little chick. That would be sad since we don't want, and can't have, a rooster. However, the garden supply store that sold us the chicks said that if that happens, we can switch out the rooster, so we won't have to worry about who to pawn him off onto. Whew.
Chicks are pretty cool little creatures. They sleep a lot and eat a lot. You clean out their water container, give them fresh water, and feed them regularly and they're pretty happy with you. Throw a little worm in the box, and they'll have a rollicking good time. This weekend it's supposed to get in the 70s outside, so we should be able to take them into the yard and little them explore a corner of the world without freezing them to death.
Names, you wonder? We're not sure yet. We're thinking maybe Buffy for the littlest one (it's a Buff Orpington), Willow for the middle one (also a Buff), and Delia for the biggest (a Delaware). Yes, the names might be inspired by the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer (really fun show...). And yes, chicken Buffy is small but strong, Willow is sweet and doesn't push the others around at all, and Delia is the Queen of the bunch.
I'm sure more chicken stories are to come, but now you've met their cute little selves! :)
